We are asking for a newness that means whatever baggage (our shortcomings/flaws) is removed, we are rendered changed forever. Even if we take some baggage back, we will never be the replica of now.
For the Christian, the symbolism of baptism (immersed in water) expresses well, the spiritual death of the old me and raising of the new me as I’m raised from below the water, cleansed from the inside out. See 1 Peter 3: 18-21 and Acts 22: 12-16. With humility this is really what we are asking God to do for us in this step!
