Jacob sent gifts ahead to test the waters......?

The story of Jacob making up with his brother Esau demonstrates how careful we must be in our approach to reconciliation or asking for forgiveness. Jacob sent several groups ahead with many gifts to get some idea how he might be received when he arrived in person? See The Life Recovery Devotional for day 28 of step nine and/or Genesis 32: 13-21.

There may be areas that you know need attention and amending of some sort, but you are unsure of the approach. Try writing out your words, praying over them and waiting for that special peace that only God provides. If you don’t get it, try something else. There may be some situations that are better off left alone. Try writing a letter and keeping it for now. Bounce the idea off one or two of your program friends and then move on. Your effort for now is complete and should things change in the future; well then you can reconsider.

Time to move onto to our October season of building a “regular self-checking  and correcting our wrongs system” or in 12 step language, We Continue to Take Personal Inventory and When We Are Wrong We promptly admit it.

Cautious amends...doing what is best for the other guy

Making Amends to God....?

For the believer, this is a confusing question! We know that we are told that all our sins “yesterday’s, today’s and tomorrow’s” have been forgiven once and for all when Jesus died for the sins of the world. However, and rightly so, there seems to be that sick feeling when we know we are choosing the wrong path. Well we are still responsible for our deeds, good or bad and must pay the price as dictated by the laws and situations, whatever our blunder happens to be.

Separating our behavior from our status as believers is very important so that we are not brought down to acceptance of our bad habits that seem to take over from time to time. We must not become a slave to the idea that we can never have hope of relief in any specific area. REMEMBER THAT ONCE YOU HAVE BELIEVED, YOUR ETERNAL DESTINY IS

SECURE. So take your mistakes in hand move on and reach out to another who is hurting (fastest way to getting back in the saddle, for me anyway).

A lie isolates and an amend frees......

The best way to give people power over us is to lie to them. Ever notice how the very presence of someone we have lied to, or held back information from, or purposefully left out of something, makes us uncomfortable and brings on shameful feelings. Coming clean and simply going to this person in humility is the most freeing process. The reaction is not important, although we hope to be forgiven. We have NOW done all we can do to rectify the past situation and we can move on in peace without wasting any more energy on concealment.

For the scripture reader, the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 in the garden is a classic example of this.

1-serpent LIES, he says to Eve, you will be like God if you eat this fruit

2-instantly upon disobeying she feels SHAME due to a loss of childlike innocence (her nakedness now bothers her)

3-she LIES to God, blames temptation of the serpent (more shame)

4-Adam blames Eve, LIES to himself and feels more shame

Feel the web of deceit growing and how a simple LIE can turn into a massive problem in several relationships!

Letting your enemies off the hook, wow, what an energy saver! Turning it around and taking the biblical route by writing off the debt, loving them and encouraging them in their future life. Their indebtedness to you may be the stumbling block that has them stuck. We see prison inmates come alive with hope because we love and treat them as equals and ask absolutely nothing in return. A lovely way to give real hope to those who will likely receive it nowhere else. They will share that hope in many cases as well!!

Celebrating an amend.............

My Son is Home

The person making the amend has already been punished and please let’s celebrate his/her delivering of it with enthusiasm and love. This person has changed direction in life and is clearing the wreckage of her/his past. The trip to make the amend is humiliating and painful and the amend comes unconditionally, unhindered and no strings attached.

I love the story of the Prodigal Son as he returns totally prepared to accept the lowest of positions only to be surprised with love and a celebration. What a picture! Luke 15: 11-24

Making amends is about love and FREEDOM!

Returning To Amend

As we focus on cleaning up the past by making amends, we must look at any vows, commitments, promises , debts, contracts and agreements that are incomplete or unfulfilled. Rigorous honesty with ourselves,others and God will be our biggest ally in this exercise of correction. Days 1 and 2 in The Life Recovery Devotional further explain these principles with scripture references 2 Samuel 9: 1-9 and Luke 19: 1-10
