Bill W's Beginning

SCOTT@SharingTheBurden.ca
Bill Wilson co founder of AA before AA started, describing his conversion experience:
My depression deepened unbearably and finally it seemed to me as though I were at the the very bottom of the pit. I still gagged at the thought of a Power greater than myself, but finally ,just for a moment, the last vestige of my pride and obstinacy was crushed. All at once I found myself crying out, "If there is a God, let Him show Himself! I am ready to do anything, anything!"
Suddenly, the room lit up with a great white light. I was caught up into an ecstasy which there are no words to describe. It seemed to me in the mind's eye, that I was on a mountain and a wind not of air but of spirit was blowing. And then it burst upon me that iIwas a free man. slowly the ecstasy subsided. I lay on there bed, but now for a time I was in another world, a new world of consciousness. All about me and through me there was a wonderful feeling of Presence, and I thought to myself, "so this is the God of the preachers!" A great peace stole over me and I thought, "No matter how wrong things seem to be, they are still all right . Things are all right with God and His world."
My point in relating Bill W's story of Spiritual awakening is to state simply that it happened at the very beginning of recovery. This is why we at Sharing The Burden are such strong believers in getting the new person through the steps to spiritual enlightenment as quickly as possible. We know of course that the real in depth work that recovery requires will not all be done in the beginning, but the most important truth of the program will be revealed, namely that TWELVE STEP RECOVERY IS A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE and will always be incomplete without communication to a Power greater than man/woman. Reaching out for Spiritual help is the real beginning and answer to that reaching out (prayer) is the Spiritual assistance immediately added to the working of all 12 steps.
So in my opinion, bringing someone through the 12 steps quickly as is done in the www.aabacktobasics.org program provides accelerated healing, growth and recovery. Teach them to pray using the two way prayer format of the earliest 12 steppers where 75% recovered.
